I encourage anyone thinking about buying or selling real property to educate themselves as much as possible.Sites such as Redfin,trulia,zillow, or the city charts of "DQ news" can all be helpful although all of them have limitations,especially the "zestimates" on Zillow.It is a good idea to review the definition of "median price" and read a few discussions of how the change in the mix of sales can skew these figures.There simply is no one stop shop for good information on Real Estate including the MLS,one reason engaging the help of a professional can be a real benefit.

Fundamentals

My late father was an Appraiser and Expert Witness who practiced in Oakland for more than three decades.Both he and his oldest friend ( A very successful investor) pounded the fundamentals of Real Estate into my head starting at a very early age.The fundamental aspects are quite simple,applying them intelligently to a particular property or market somewhat more difficult.Due diligence is the key to a good purchase,whether it be a home to live in or an investment and it is something I enjoy.

I represent buyers and sellers

Primarily in residential real estate located in Western Sonoma County although I have a good deal of familiarity with parts of the East Bay and Sacramento regions of California.I see properties from the viewpoint of an Investor or Appraiser and have been a keen student of the market for the last 5 years.
Since I have been advising people  NOT to buy Florida condo's or other clearly overpriced property for 5 years I have a number of thankful people in my life,but few sales.The market has changed and I see some homes and properties at historically reasonable prices with more on the way.

Like everyone else in the business I am a member of the various Real Estate boards and have pledged to adhere to the ethical guidelines promulgated by the NAR,the CAR and NorBar.I was first licensed as a sales agent in 1976,did some sales,did legwork for my father,and moved into Risk Management and Property Management for a number of years.I have held an "Appraiser Trainee" license but did not pursue that career due to the limited opportunities then available (2 year unpaid internship).I have been an active participant or reader of several  Real Estate and economic blogs for the last 5 years, "Calculated Risk" being the most prominent.
